For Promotion we will meet at 3:30 to place everyone on the risers and do a very quick sound check.  Please make it a priority to be on time so we make sure everyone is seen and heard.  Don’t forget if you got a 3 year pin, outstanding member cords, or 8th grade medals, to wear it for promotion.

This Week In Choir

Hello Choir Families,

Choir Party!

We had sooooo much fun today celebrating a fantastic year in choir.  The kids got many awards, ate waaaayyyy too much sugar, and watched our slide show.  The students were great and many of them helped clean up at the end of each class.  Pictures will be posted on our Instagram page and I will put the slide show link into Google Classroom this weekend.  And a big shout out to the mommies who helped set up and monitor food and for everyone who donated to the part.  The kids ate all they could and took food with them.

Thank You!

As the year is wrapping up I just wanted to thank you all for everything you do to support this program.  I really appreciate those of you who volunteered for events, including donating food.    Thank you for spoiling me last week for teacher appreciation.  I got so many nice cards and gifts and it really means a lot.  I also wanted to shout out those of you who have agreed to join our booster board next year.  We have a few spots still open if you are feeling a tug to join us please do!  It’s a great group and when we share the load no one gets overwhelmed, including me!

Final project of the year

Students have been working this week designing show choir sets.  Next week they will present them to the class for their final.  I started looking through them today and I am finding A LOT of AI.  Please ask them to review their sets this weekend and tweak them as needed.  They can use AI to get ideas but the majority of the work needs to be their own creation.

Friends of the Library

Our last performance of the year is coming up!  Sound Check will be performing at the Friends of the Library scholarship ceremony on Sunday May 31st at 2:00 the Montecito Center in Rossmoor. (12341 Montecito)  Following the performance they will walk to Rossmoor In and Out for burgers and fun.

Promotion

All 8th graders in choir will be singing for promotion!  We will meet at 3:30 to place everyone on the risers and do a very quick sound check.  Please make it a priority to be on time so we make sure everyone is seen and heard.  Don’t forget if you got a 3 year pin to wear it for promotion.

Costumes Due

We are in the process of putting away costumes so I you have not yet returned yours please clean it over the long weekend and return it Tuesday.

Costume Closet Volunteers

I am excited to announce that choir was awarded a Run Seal Beach grant to purchase storage bins and rolling carts for the costume closet.  Having this space organized and clean is essential to making sure our shows look amazing.  I am looking for a couple of parents (ask a friend to help you) to supervise and organize the costume closet this summer.  I will be on campus teaching for LAEF from 8:30-12:30 June 8-26.  I am going to have students sign up for volunteer hours and need parents to supervise them while I’m teaching my classes.  Let me know if you are interested and available.

This Week In Choir

Hello Choir Families,

Thank you all so much for coming out and supporting Concert On the Green.  It is one of my favorite events of the year and I hope you enjoyed it.  Shout out to the booster team for organizing it all, and to all of you who helped set up and tear down.  It all ran very smoothly and I was so grateful to have such a great team in place during a difficult time.  The kids were awesome and I think they all had a lot of fun too.

I also wanted to express my sincere gratitude for all of the condolences AND for the very generous gift of South West cards.  As most of you know, we fly to Kansas twice a year to see family and this year we had a funeral, 2 weddings, along with our regular trip at Christmas.  All this to say, it’s going to be an expensive travel year for us so this incredible gift will go a long way to help us get there.  Thank you so much for all of the ways you help support the program.

Audition Results!

As I’m sure you are aware, audition results will be posted at 3:15 today via Google Classroom.  This is always a tricky time as some students will be very excited while others may be disappointed.  Both emotions are OK and allowed.  I just ask that students and families be mindful of one another as you react and post in public spaces.  Not all students will be in a celebratory mood.  I also ask that you help your child keep things in perspective.  We all grow, learn, and mature at different rates and we all have our own path.  All of our groups are growing in both size and skill and no matter where they land, it is my goal to create an ensemble where they can thrive and grow.

Choir Pictures!
We are collecting pictures from families and students to be included in a slide show at the choir party.  The students can submit up to 5 photos via Google Classroom and we want to make sure every student is included. Pictures must be uploaded by Wednesday May 13th to be included in the video.

Angels Game

Angel’s tickets were sent home last week and hopefully you all have them and have taken a picture of them.  Families must get their student to and from this event, and I will only be chaperoning your child while they are on the field.  Once they find their seats they will be your responsibility.  Please review behavior expectations with your student as we are representing our school, our program, and our country in a very public way.  We will need to be very disciplined.  Here is the time line for the day.

4:45-arrive wearing the McAuliffe Choir t-shirt and pants (not shorts), park and walk to Gate 6.  Students should have everything they need in their pockets (ei. Phone and ticket).  No back packs, purses, jackets, etc. are allowed on the field.

5:00 rehearse with the other choirs

6:00 line up in the tunnel to take the field

6:27 perform

Following performance, students will exit the field and go in through the ticket gate.  They will need their ticket with them to get in.

Costume Return

Costumes are due by May 15th, but you can start bringing them in any time before that. Outfits need to be returned clean and not in a garment bag. Please pin your name to the costume. If you drop off your costume at Sunset Cleaners, they will return it labeled.

Sixth Sense

Yellow dresses can be hand-washed or dry cleaned. Pin the yellow ribbon to the dress.

Sound Waves

Black dresses can be hand-washed or dry cleaned. Please return the tiara but not the gloves.

Soul Men

Jeans and baseball shirts can be machine washed. Shirt return is optional. If you would like to keep it you may, but if you won’t wear it again, please return it to us.

Studio Singers

Pink dresses can be hand-washed or dry cleaned only. If you won’t wear your gold shoes again, you can donate them to us.

Sound Check

If you would like to donate your choir jacket back to the program (even with your name on it), that would help future Sound Check students who forget their jackets.

Seal Beach Grant

I am excited to announce that choir was awarded a Run Seal Beach grant to purchase storage bins and rolling carts for the costume closet.  Having this space organized and clean is essential to making sure our shows look amazing.  Once those items arrive, I would love to have some volunteers to come in and start putting things away.  I will also have some summer work as if the 8th graders want to get started on their high school volunteer hours!  I’ll keep you posted.

Choir Olympics and Choir Party!

Next week we are having our Choir Olympics!  Each day the students will have a different set of challenges loosely related to choir skills.  They will get points for winning and we will change teams every day.  The winners will be announced at our in class party May 22nd.  We will also hand out awards for the winners of the music video project and the class awards the kids voted on in April.  The party will be a pot luck so start planning your contributions!  I’d love to have some parent helpers that day as well if anyone is available.

Bingo!  8th Grade Parents

This Week in Choir

Hello Choir Families,

Concert on the Green is just around the corner.  The students finished up their projects today in class and next week we will be finishing their other songs.  Tickets to the general public will go on sale Monday.  Benefactors will get an email prior to that with a code for early tickets. We need volunteers for this one and we would love some of the younger parents to take this on so the 8th grade parents can just come and enjoy.  We do not need chaperones so all of the volunteers will get to see the show!  Sign up here https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/10C094AACAC2AABFAC43-51683956-mcauliffe?useFullSite=false

Angels’ tickets have arrived and we are getting them ready to hand out to students.  We should have those ready early next week and I will send an email the day they go home so you know to check the back packs.  Please take pictures of them as soon as you get them as we do not have electronic copies of the tickets.

Auditions!

Auditions went great!  We had Studio Singer dance auditions on Wednesday with the largest and most confident group of girls we’ve even had.  Our groups are looking really strong for next year and I could not be more excited.  I’ll be listening to vocal auditions over the next couple of weeks and we will post results after school May 15th.  8th graders will submit their auditions to the high school my May 3rd.  Cara, Josh, Jayden, and Jasmine were in classes yesterday going over that dance.  The students were amazing and super focused.  They were very impressed with them.

Summer Musical audition opportunity-girls only

Our choreographer, Kylie, is a part of the Torrance Theatre Company, and this summer, they are putting on Frozen the Musical! They are searching for Young Anna and Elsa and want kids between the ages of 10-14 to audition. Ideally, the kids can look between the ages of 7-9 on stage, but there is likely some flexibility with that. This is a wonderful opportunity for the kids!! The link below provides all the information you would need about auditions, rehearsal, and shows. If you have any questions, you can contact torrancetheatreco@gmail.com or Kylie at kchristensen@losal.org

Theory Test

All choirs will be completing a study guide and will have a theory test this Thursday over, rhythm, note names, solfege, dictation, and definitions.  Sound Check has also added key signatures to their repertoire this semester! It is an open note test so all information on their study guide can be used to help them with their test.  They will get their study guide on Tuesday.  Thursday is a minimum day so students who need more time to take the test may come to the choir room right after school to finish.

Music Video Projects-All Choirs

These videos will be viewed at our Concert on the Green in May.  Students will be working in class over the next couple of months to create, record, and film music videos.  We will be using the recording studio in the choir room to record vocals and students will be filming on and off campus.

Audition Information

All students will turn in an audition either to me or to the high school  regardless of their elective choir for next year.  This is an assignment for choir and teaches them how to follow instructions, upload a resume, record their audition, and prepare for an audition.  The audition assignment is already on Classroom for 6th and 7th graders and the 8th grade information will be coming soon.  We are working in class on all aspects of the audition.

They have not finalized the schedule yet but the event starts at 8:00am.  We will be meeting at McAuliffe at 6:45 to load the bus and head to Anaheim High School.  After awards will take the busses to eat lunch together and will return to McAuliffe early afternoon.  I will send more details as soon as I have them.

Music Video Projects-All Choirs

Sixth Sense and Sound Check have started work on their music video projects!  These will be viewed at our Concert on the Green in May.  Students will be working in class over the next couple of months to create, record, and film music videos.  We will be using the recording studio in the choir room to record vocals and students will be filming on and off campus.

Volunteer

As you know we can’t do this without you.  Please volunteer on the night you are not seeing the show.  Our kids must be supervised backstage so please fill up those chaperone spots first!

Go to McAuliffeChoir.com to order tickets, volunteer, and purchase buttons and break a legs.

Concert Hair

As this is our competition show, the ladies have very specific hair needs.  Please be practicing the hair next week so you are ready.  All hair types are different so do your best to mimic the look even if the tutorial doesn’t work for your hair.  I gave the girls examples in class on what to do with short and/or braided hair.

Boys hair just needs to be out of their face so they don’t touch it.  Some of them will be wearing hats as well.

Here is the itinerary for the day.  Please review it with your student.

Chaperones

If you are chaperoning, please arrive at the school by 8:30 on Friday for a briefing.  I will explain ticket distribution, expectations for the day, assign students for early pick up, and we will create a phone list.  Loading and unloading the bus will be the hardest part of the day.  The rest is fun stuff!

Early Pick Up from Knotts

If your child will not be riding the bus home from Knott’s, please complete this form ASAP.  It was due Wednesday.

SCVA Vocal Jazz and A Cappella Festival

Sound Check will be participating in the SCVA A Cappella Festival on Saturday Feb. 7th from 8:30-4:00.   We will be taking a bus to the event in Santa Clarita.  This is a very unique experience for the students as they will hear high school vocal jazz and a cappella ensembles, and get a clinic from professionals in the field.

Jessica will be organizing our lunch but I am still looking for a couple of parents who can go with us to help chaperone.  Let me know if you’re interested.

Band rehearsal!

We had rehearsal with our band leader Lindsey on Monday and I met with the entire band after school.  They are fantastic and the kids are going to sound so good!!!!  Thank you for all you do to support and make this opportunity available to the students.  It makes a huge difference in the way they perform.

This Week in Choir

Hello Choir Families,

Things are really starting to come together!  Costumes are almost complete and back drops are being made for each choir.  Shout out to Christina for altering Studio dresses and the boys got names put on their shirts this week.  Robyn and Aileen ordered us some incredible back drops, and Jessica and Jason are working on  the frames that will hold them.  The drama tech program painted a fence for us and Reagan and Peyton made chandeliers and a new numberline!  We are so blessed to have so many amazing humans on our team.  The boys had another session with Alex and all choirs will get a clinic with Andrew on Monday.  It’s really exciting to see the shows coming together.

Prop Needs

We are in need of a few more items if anyone has or can make them.  We need old baseball gloves, preferably brown and small.  We have 3 leftys FYI.  We also need high end shopping bags.  Gucci, Tiffany’s, Sax 5th Ave. etc.  These should be sturdy as we will be throwing them around and they’ll need to last the season.  They do not need to be authentic, just look real from stage.

Tech Parents

We have some fantastic back drops for each choir that we will be using throughout our competition season.  We need 2 adults to assist our student tech teams at competitions and concerts.  We would like these parent volunteers to be consistent for efficiency.  The pieces are very light so there is no strength requirement for this position. If you think you will be attending all or most of the competitions this year and would be willing to help, please contact Christine Ostrander at cmariebythesea@gmail.com.

Knott’s Berry Farm Feb. 13th

Tickets have been ordered and we are all set for the trip!  Here is the itinerary for the day and a link for early pick up if needed.  I’ll be handing this out in class next week.

Red Carpet Concert Shout Outs!

We have our second home concert of the year coming up and we are so excited to show you what we’ve been working on.  This show will be our preview to the competition season!

If you would like to place a one line shout out to your student in the program for our show please place that order by Tuesday Jan 27.  Orders can be placed at McAuliffeChoir.com.  You can also order buttons, break-a-legs, and baseball cards!

Tickets for the show will go on sale next week.  You will receive an email when it’s time to order.  Once you secure your tickets, be sure to sign up to volunteer on the night you are not watching the show.

All-Parent Booster Meeting

All parents are invited to our booster meeting on Feb. 6 at 6:00pm via Zoom.  I will send the link the week before.  We will lay out all of the information for second semester, student and parent expectations for competition, concerts, Knott’s etc.  For parents who’ve never been through a competition season this will be very helpful and I encourage all of you to hop in the Zoom.  The meeting should only be 30 minutes.

We will need at least 2 parents to join us on the bus and help organize lunch for the students.
